Two killed as suicide bombers blow themselves up at Niger refugee camp

Two killed as suicide bombers blow themselves up at Niger refugee camp Two women bombers blew themselves up in a refugee camp in southeastern Niger, killing two other people in a suspected attack by Boko Haram Islamists from neighbouring Nigeria. Boko Haram’s insurgency began in northeast Nigeria and has spread to Chad, Cameroon and Niger, claiming more than 20,000 lives and displacing 2.6 million people. They are increasingly staging suicide attacks using women and girls. Wednesday’s attack took place in Kabalewa, a village near the southeastern Niger city of Diffa, which is close to Nigeria. “Two women suicide bombers infiltrated the refugee camp and blew themselves up, killing two civilians in the camp,” an aid worker said. Private radio stations said the victims were a man and a woman. A local official confirmed the attack but did not give a toll. Boko Haram members have been staging regular attacks in the Diffa region since 2015. There are more than 300,000 re...

Court dismisses suit challenging Aregbesola’s non-appointment of commissioners OSUN.GOV.NG A High court in Osogbo, Osun State, has dismissed the suit filed by a lawyer, Kanmi Ajibola, challenging the failure of Governor of Osun State, Rauf Aregbesola, to appoint commissioners and special advisers. The court held that the plaintiff lacked locus standi. Justice Adedoyin Ayoola, in his judgment, upheld the preliminary objection filed by the Governor of Osun State challenging the suit on the basis of lack of locus standi by the plaintiff. The court adopted the argument canvassed by Adewale Afolabi, the immediate past Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice of Osun State and Counsel to Mr. Aregbesola, that Mr. Ajibola failed to make available to the court facts which showed that he suffered extraordinary injury by Governor Rauf Aregbesola’s failure to appoint commissioners and special advisers. Citing the relevant Supreme Court cases, the judge concluded that Mr....

Southeast group slams IBB over calls for Nigeria’s restructuring

Southeast group slams IBB over calls for Nigeria’s restructuring The Eastern Consultative Assembly (ECA) has faulted former military president Ibrahim Babangida over his call for restructuring of Nigeria. In a statement in Enugu signed by its Secretary, Evang. Elliot Ugochukwu-Uko, the group said Babangida belonged to the club of the elite who bluntly refused to accept that the style, manner and format of the creation of the existing 36 states were a huge source of grief to millions of Nigerians and therefore, the real bone of contention. Gen Babangida (rtd) had on Monday said the time had come for Nigeria to be restructured. Babaginda, who urged leaders across the aggrieved parts of the country to show maturity, insisted that war is not a “joke anyone should toy with.” Reacting, however ECA noted that any restructuring that tended to maintain the 36 states as federating units, would not serve any useful purpose whatsoever. Uko declared that “whereas, General Bab...

Trump called Mika Brzezinski “low IQ crazy Mika”, in response to disparaging remarks about him on an MSNBC show. He also referred to her “bleeding badly from a facelift” and assailed her co-presenter Joe Scarborough. Senator Lindsey Graham said Trump’s remarks were “beneath the office” of president. He said the tweet “represents what is wrong with American politics, not the greatness of America”. “Please just stop. This isn’t normal,” tweeted fellow Republican Senator Ben Sasse. Republican House Speaker Paul Ryan also joined the criticism, saying: “I don’t see that as an appropriate comment. What we’re trying to do around here is improve the tone, the civility of the debate. Militants shelve bombing of oil facilities from June 30 The New Delta Avengers, a militant group, has shelved its threat to launch attacks on oil facilities in Delta State from the midnight of June 30, 2017. The planned attack was to draw the attention of the Federal Government to the alleged starving of oil communities of funds by Governor Ifeanyi Okowa. The militants in a letter to Clark signed by the Ijaw, Itsekiri, Urhobo, Isoko and Ndokwa “high commanders” of the group said they were shelving the planned attack due to appeals by Chief Edwin Kiagbodo Clark and his determination to end the impoverishment of oil communities. They said although they would not attack oil facilities but they would not demobilize their armaments, hardware and men from locations where they have been camping since they were dispatched three weeks ago until they were sure of positive result from Clark’s intervention. ECOWAS should have common currency to boost trade – Obasanjo Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has called on the leaders of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to agree on common currency to boost the regional trade. Obasanjo made call at the ongoing 24th Annual General Meeting of the African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) in Kigali speaking on: ‘Can Regional Economic Communities Work for Africa: Lessons from a Founding Father.’ He stated that the issue of common currency was getting delayed because the regional leaders had put forward “ECO” as a name for the currency but wondered why it had not been adopted saying that the currency is required to move the current level of the regional trade from 25 per cent to more than 50 per cent. He however blamed too many internal conflicts and changes in policies, among others, as some of the challenges facing the region but said it should not be allowed to mitigate the flow of trade within the region. SEC adopts measure to tackle multiple subscriptions

Image
SEC adopts measure to tackle multiple subscriptions Equities regulator, the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has announced that capital market investors with multiple subscriptions for the same public offer may forfeit their investment. Considering the negative effect of the act to the market, the Commission had constituted a market committee, aimed at reaching a collective decision on how the shares and dividends accrued to such investors through multiple applications should be treated. Multiple subscriptions to public offers occurred during the market boom when investors joggled their names in different forms to enable them purchase more than the permitted units of shares in public offers. According to a statement by the Commission, “The SEC at its last Capital Market Committee meeting (CMC) has approved the report of a market wide committee on formulating a uniform position for the treatment of multiple subscriptions to public offers. “The Nigerian Ca...

Could Apple’s next big thing be a car?

Image
Could Apple’s next big thing be a car? Mac Rumors The California technology colossus behind the iPhone has confirmed its interest in self-driving cars, but experts are trying to deduce the secretive company’s plans for traction in a market where others have been speeding along. Apple co-founder Steve Jobs, who died in 2011, contemplated putting the company’s hardware and software smarts to work in a car nearly a decade ago, according to reports in trade press. Speculation about an Apple Car became the stuff of myth, with much talk and little evidence until recently. In mid-June, Apple chief executive Tim Cook revealed that the company is focusing on software that powers self-driving vehicles, referring to it as “by far the most important project in artificial intelligence.” Cook depicted electric vehicles, self-driving cars, and ride-sharing as major forces shaping the future of the automobile. Analysts said that driverless cars that can be summoned on demand to wh...

Image
NBET pays GENCOs N12.69 billion electricity invoices in February The Nigerian Bulk Electricity Trading Plc (NBET) said it paid about N12.69 billion to electricity generating companies (GenCos) in the country out of the total invoices of ₦ 37.38 billion for energy delivered in February. NBET, which made this known in its “Gencos payment based on Distribution Companies (Discos) receipt,” said this represent 33.29 per cent of their total invoices for the month. Between February 2015 and December 2016, the market shortfall (amount owed by Discos to the rest of the market) was estimated at N473 billion, with tariff shortfall put at N458 billion. These led to the slow performance of the power sector that created dissatisfaction among electricity customers who are frustrated by the poor quality of service. For example, in February alone, Genco invoice from Kainji was N2.423 billion, but only N822.875 million was paid. From the Jebba invoice of N2.327 billion, a...
