Monkeypox: Health ministry urges Nigerians to avoid eating monkeys, bush meat The Federal Ministry of Health has advised Nigerians to desist from eating monkeys, bush meat and dead animals as doing so could make one susceptible to the Monkey Pox Disease. The Minister of Health, Prof. Isaac Adewole, said this in a statement signed by the Director, Media and Public Relations at the ministry, Mrs. Boade Akinola, on Thursday. Adewole said the disease neither had a cure nor a vaccine. He, however, said there was no cause for alarm as it was mild. Man escapes from hotel after consuming beer, pepper soup worth N21,800 A 23-year-old man, Daniel Isong, who allegedly escaped from a hotel without paying for beer and pepper soup he consumed, on Thursday appeared before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court. Isong , whose residential address was not provided , is facing a three-count of obtaining under false pretences, breach of peace and stealing. The prosecutor, Insp. Victor Eruada, had told the court that the accused and one other person at large committed the offences on Sept. 12 at Urban Hotel located on Yaya Street, Ogba, Lagos. Buhari appoints new CBN deputy governor, MPC members President Muhammadu Buhari has presented Aishah Ahmad to the Senate for confirmation as Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN. She is to replace a former Deputy Governor, who retired early this year. In accordance with the provisions of Section 8(1) (2) of the Central Bank of Nigeria (Establishment) Act 2007, President Buhari urged the Senate President, Bukola Saraki, to consider the expeditious confirmation of Mrs. Ahmad, who would then resume work immediately. In the same vein, the president has written the Senate, seeking the confirmation of appointment of members of the Monetary Policy Committee of the CBN. They are to replace four members, whose tenure expires at the end of this year. The nominees are: Adeola Adenikinju; Aliyu SAnu$i; Robert Asogwa and Asheikh Maidugu. After Senate clearance, the new members of the Monetary Policy Committee are to resume duties next January.

Seven ships arrive Lagos ports with petrol, other commodities No fewer than seven ships laden with various commodities, including petrol have arrived the Lagos Ports waiting to berth, the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) said on Thursday. The NPA made this disclosure in its daily “Shipping Position’’ made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos, stressing that five of the vessels were to berth with petrol. It said that two other ships would berth with bulk fertiliser and containers. The NPA added that 25 other ships laden with petroleum products, food items and other goods were expected at the Apapa and Tin-Can Island ports between Oct. 5 and Oct. 21. “The expected ships are carrying buckwheat, containers, general cargoes, base oil, containers, bulk gypsum, kerosene, diesel and petrol,’’ it said. Pentagon confirms three US soldiers killed in Niger ambush Jason Reed/Reuters Three US soldiers and one from another nation were killed when a joint US-Niger patrol was ambushed near the border with Mali in southwest Niger, the Pentagon confirmed on Thursday. The Pentagon said two other US soldiers were wounded in the attack which took place while they were assisting Nigerien counter-terror operations in the troubled area. The attack took place approximately 200km north of Niamey in southwest Niger, the US Africa Command said in a statement from its headquarters in Stuttgart, Germany. That put the attack on the border with Mali, where violent jihadist groups are known to operate. The slain soldiers were not identified, but media reports say they were Green Beret special forces in Niger to train local forces. The nationality of the fourth person killed was not given. This is according to the Chairman, Independent National Electoral Commission, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, who also disclosed that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission was already probing the commission’s officials in 20 states over alleged electoral fraud. He said this during a quarterly consultative meeting with journalists in Abuja on Tuesday. No cause for alarm over outbreak of monkey pox virus – Bayelsa govt PNA The Bayelsa Government on Thursday allayed fears of possible epidemic following the outbreak of a contagious viral disease called “monkey pox” in the state. INEC Fixes date for Osun and Ekiti governorship election The Independent National Electoral Commission has fixed July 14, 2018 for the governorship election in Ekiti State. The state will elect a new person to replace incumbent Ayo Fayose, whose tenure lapses. The neighbouring Osun State will also elect a new governor in September 2018, to replace Rauf Aregbesola who completes his second term. Senate to investigate NNPC boss following allegations leveled against him by Ibe Kachikwu The Senate has set up a panel to investigate the Group Managing Director of the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation NNPC, Maikanti Baru, over allegations made against him by the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Dr. Ibe Kachikwu, in a petition sent to President Buhari. Kachikwu in the petition dated August 30th, accused Baru of insubordination and the award of a $25 million contract without going through due process.
