– Even in a friendly version, El Clasico doesn’t disappoint as Gerard
Pique’s winner edged another thrilling five-goal contest in Barcelona ‘s
favour as Spain’s biggest show was turned into a very American occasion
for the first time in Miami.
Victory was a deserved one for Ernesto Valverde’s men although both
sides could have scored plenty more goals in an open encounter fitting
of a pre-season friendly.
But despite having won all three games of their US tour, Barca’s
pre-season will still be defined off the field by whether they hold onto
Neymar or not with PSG’s net closing in on the Brazilian to more than
double the current transfer record.
If it is to be his final game in a Barca shirt, Neymar went out on a
high with two assists as he teed up Ivan Rakitic to fire Barca 2-0 in
front inside seven minutes after Lionel Messi’s deflected effort opened
the scoring.
Real Madrid fought back to level before half-time as Mateo Kovacic
matched Croatian teammate Rakitic’s effort with a drive from outside the
box before Marco Asensio rounded off a stunning Madrid break from a
Barca corner to level.
Whenever these two sides meet Pique tends to have his say one way or
another, though, and his acrobatic finish from Neymar’s free-kick early
in the second-half put Barca back in front.
Jasper Cillessen produced two stunning saves to deny Isco and Dani
Ceballos was inches away from his first Madrid goal to level late on,
but the European champions have now played and lost three straight in
pre-season.
